An extremely rare Corinthian type stater from an uncertain colony
Lot 437
CORINTHIA. Uncertain colony. Circa 375-300 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 8.61 g, 3 h). Pegasos flying left. Rev. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet; behind neck guard, axe with blade downwards. BCD -, cf. 140 (head of Athena to left). Calciati -, cf. 494. Ravel -, cf. 1119 (head of Athena to left). Triskeles 19 (2017), 135 (same dies, but misdescribed as an issue from Corinth). Extremely rare. The obverse struck very slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

This is an unrecorded variety of the enigmatic 'axe' issue, labelled by both Ravel and Calciati as 'barbaric', which always lacks the ethnic initial 'Ϙ' below Pegasos.
